Chatfield shelter

Easy start to the day, managed 10.7 miles by 10:45. I got to partnership shelter at the same time as lego, the colonel, and redwood. We had already taken everyones hopeful pizza orders, as we arrived at the one shelter you can order pizza from on Easter Sunday… Luckily they were open and we were able to get out four large pizzas and two 2 liters of soda, then relax at the nicest shelter thus far before heading out.

It was about 90 degrees out when we started the second half of the day. Sierra was struggling with the heat, being tired, and the steep climb, so I ended up taking her pack for the rest of the day. On the positive side, the last mile of the trail was downhill, which made it nice and easy, plus the water source was right there when we got to camp.

Knot maul shelter

I woke up this morning around 5:30 to a 70 year old veteran thru hiker named loner boner doing what sounded like crumpling up and opening it back up again. This went on for at least a half hour… I eventually got up and hiked my really easy 4.6 miles to town for a resupply and a huge breakfast at the barn. Breakfast for $7 was 2 pancakes, 2 slices of bacon, 2 sausage patties, 2 eggs, home fries, and 2 biscuits with gravy and a coffee. After that we started our 14 or so miles to the shelter. About 3 miles in we could see the approaching thunderstorm begin to loom over our heads. I put my gators and pack cover on and within 30 seconds the big drops started to fall. Very shortly after buckets of water were being thrown on me from every angle while lightning struck all around me. Five minutes later it was gone. I was left soaked in burning humid sun. A few more scattered showers cooled me off on the rest of my hike, but the unrelenting humidity made it way tougher than it should have been. Wild berry skittles for dessert tonight and an easier day tomorrow.

  1. Haha! Loner Boner.

Sounds like a rough day, but glad today was easier.

    GO CANUCKS GO 🙂

  2. Hope the fact that you were able to post this means that you saw some of (or the highlights of) the last Sharks game. Another OT win! Sharks and Canucks are both on to the next round, not playing each other though (at least not yet).
Please watch out for that lightning!! Hope you were not in an open meadow for that. The weather looks a little dicier in the next few days, cooling off and heading into more storms, so be careful.
